Edward Steichen and the Garden
Join us August 6th 5pm - 6.30pm for a book signing and garden stroll in celebration of Sarah McNear’s publication Edward Steichen and the Garden (Eastman Museum and Yale University Press).
The book explores how the celebrated photographer Edward Steichen’s (1879–1973) immersive relationship with gardening and nature sustained him and shaped his creative vision. Through his development of original varieties of the genus Delphinium, he argued and demonstrated that plant breeding was a creative art form in a 1936 exhibition of his living flowers at the Museum of Modern Art.
A summer resident of Deer Isle, Sarah has held positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago and the Aperture Foundation. She is the author of several books including, The Photographer in the Garden (2018).
Sarah will be joined in conversation with photographer and poet Sal Taylor Kydd.
